Earlier in January, Wheels24 reported Mercedes-Benz would end production of its X-Class double cab bakkie by as early as May this year.

The reason for this decision is multi-fold, but it was still a shocker given that the announcement comes barely three years after the bakkie went into production.

Wheels24 did its utmost to relay reasons for the axing, and our readers shared their sentiments on the matter via email and social media posts. But those affected hardest by the decision, are current X-Class owners and those who already ordered a new bakkie.

It’s a tough situation for any owner to be in, but suddenly an influx of used X-Class bakkies have appeared on AutoTrader.

AutoTrader, one of the biggest online car markets in South Africa, has more than 100 X-Classes listed on its inventory, of which 25 are fitted with a manual gearbox.

As we paged through the list of X-Classes, it quickly became apparent just how expensive these bakkies still are. Some of the bakkies listed on AutoTrader reached as much as R849 900 for an X250d 4Matic Power derivative. While this specific bakkie was fitted with a few optional extras and an automatic gearbox, it still retails for a higher asking price than an equivalent new model (R818 732).

Quick 'manual' overview

The X-Class range comprises of three derivatives: the X220d Progressive, X250d available in both Progressive and Power trims, and the X350d - also in Progressive and Power. The X220d is available with a six-speed manual gearbox only, while the X250d is equipped with either a manual or auto 'box. The X350d only has an automatic transmission.

Both the X220d and X250d is powered by the same turbocharged 2.3-litre diesel engine that does duty in the Nissan Navara. Power outputs are rated at 120kW/403Nm and 140kW/450Nm, respectively. The X350d's 3.0-litre V6 turbo diesel motor churns out 190kW and 550Nm.

Some might argue that the X-Class’s production ended prematurely, but too much counted against it. Like the price, for instance. At R642 368 for the entry-level X220d, it was almost R133 000 more expensive than the entry-level Navara that had the same power outputs as the X250d. It wasn't an ideal situation for the X-Class, but definitely a rued chance to become the leading premium bakkie in South Africa.
