The internet has been rife with news of a new Ford bakkie that will reportedly slot in below the Ranger.

Codenamed the Maverick, this bakkie will draw inspiration from the recently-launched Ford Bronco - an SUV that will go up against the likes of the Jeep Wrangler and Land Rover Defender.

Though the Maverick is expected to be revealed either in 2021 or 2022, Brazil Automotive rendered several images of how they think the bakkie will look.

That Bronco life

The team at Brazil Automotive put their skills to the test to envision how such a bakkie will look. At the front, the Bronco's grille takes centre stage. The headlights, with LEDs incorporated into it, have been carried over from the Bronco, but the front bumper sees a different design to the SUV's.

Running along the sides are blackened side skirts. Judging by the images, this feature has extra padding to prevent the bodywork from scraping when going off the beaten track. The roll-bar on top of the loading bay, from what we can gather, is taken from the Ranger WildTrak.

Brazil Automotive says that the bakkie's rear-end recently leaked on the internet and that the Maverick name was on it. As such, it's possible that this could be how the bakkie's rear will look in reality.

Should it come to SA?

Wheels24 has been covering news on the Maverick extensively in 2020, with several sources predicting the design of the bakkie. Readers, too, are keen for the bakkie to make its local debut if Ford South Africa should decide to launch it here. Why? Because of the price.

Though specifications and pricing for this new bakkie have not yet been released, an expected starting price of under $20 000 (R330 279, est.) has been rumoured. If the bakkie should debut locally at that price-point, it will undercut the entry-level Ranger 2.2 TDCi Hi-Rider XL single cab (R396 700) by R66 000. However, if Ford decides to bring the Maverick to SA, expect it to cost more than the converted price.

Our take is that the Maverick will be a hit among local buyers. Not only will the bakkie be a tad smaller than the Ranger, but it will be a more manoeuvrable bakkie to drive than either the Ranger or any of the Ranger rivals. And at the price, Ford could very well have a best-selling vehicle on their hands - even if it means nabbing sales from the formidable Ranger.

It's unlikely that the Maverick will be sold locally, but we'll keep you updated on developments - if there are any.
