Ford Performance Ranger Raptor won the coveted 4x4 of the Year at the Australian Motoring Awards in Melbourne on Thursday (Jan 31).

The Ranger Raptor was judged the best 4x4 by a renowned panel of judges after a gruelling week-long process, fending off rivals including the HSV Colorado SportsCat, Mercedes-Benz X250d and Volkswagen Amarok V6 Core.

“On any back road – the rougher the better – or any 4x4 track it works brilliantly and helps to make the Raptor an enormously fun-to-drive, competent and capable recreational 4x4 dual-cab,” reported 4x4 Australia.

Fittingly, the Ranger Raptor’s biggest threat also came from Ford, with the Ranger XLT Bi-Turbo finishing second in what was an impressive showing for the T6-platformed vehicles.

The Ranger Raptor’s win is only the second time in the award’s 35-year history that Ford has taken out 4x4OTY, with the Everest winning Ford’s first in 2015.

The Ranger Raptor was also a finalist in the WhichCar Style awards, which saw it break through as the first dual-cab pick up to ever be considered for the award, against more expensive and fashion-led competition.
