Cape Town - Mitsubishi’s crossover SUV, the Outlander, has undergone a makeover giving it a fresh new look along with interior upgrades.

Nic Campbell, general manager for Mitsubishi Motors South Africa said: “The Mitsubishi Outlander is a luxury lifestyle vehicle in every sense of the word. It’s spacious, comfortable and stylish with all the features customers expect in a vehicle of this calibre.

"The new design language gives it a fresh, bold appearance that truly illustrates the Outlander’s capabilities.”

Fresh design

The Outlander is noticeably longer than its competitors. The second and third row seats can be folded completely flat, opening up additional loading space. The seats in the second row can slide 250mm forward which makes for easy access to the third row from either side of the vehicle. the Outlander boasts a turning radius of 5.3m.

The new Outlander is equipped with an impressive Rockford Fosgate sound system that makes use of nine speakers, a 710W eight-channel high-power amplifier and subwoofer. A 9-inch roof-mounted DVD player with a fold-down screen can be found in the middle of the vehicle - visible to second and third row passengers.

The revised SUV is fitted with a multi-function steering wheel with gearshift paddles and access to voice controls and Bluetooth functionality. The facia features a touch-screen, while a separate display screen ensures all vehicle information is available to the driver at a glance.

The vehicle comes standard with leather seats, glass sunroof, automatic lights and windshield wipers, dual-zone climate control and cruise control.

Safety

The Outlander is further equipped with all the crucial safety features, including Active Stability and Traction Control (ASTC), ABS brakes with Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD) and Emergency Brake Assist (BAS), as well as Hill Start Assist (HSA) for tricky inclines. seven airbags and full ISO-FIX child anchors.

Mitsubishi says the Outlander earned a five-star safety rating in the Euro NCAP crash test assessment.

Engine

The facelifted Outlander is powered by Mitsubishi’s 2.4-litre petrol engine producing 123kW/222Nm, and average fuel consumption is rated at 8.2-litres/100km.

Power is delivered to all four wheels through Mitsubishi’s next-generation Continuous Variable Transmission (CVT) with a six-step Sports Mode shift control. The Outlander's Multi Select Four Wheel Drive system has three modes to choose from, says the automaker:

  • 4WD Eco Mode: - In Eco Mode the vehicle monitors the terrain and driver input and only engages all-wheel drive when necessary. Selecting Eco Mode and allowing the vehicle to monitor driving conditions reduce fuel consumption and ensure a more efficient drive.

  • 4WD Auto Mode: - In Auto Mode, the Outlander will stay in all-wheel-drive, unless the road conditions are so smooth that it’s completely unnecessary. Similar to Eco Mode, Auto Mode will automatically adjust the all-wheel-drive, but it recognises that all-wheel drive is the preference (unlike Eco Mode, which will only switch to all-wheel drive when it’s really necessary).

  • 4WD Lock Mode: - By selecting Lock Mode under normal road conditions, priority is placed on performance. More torque is directed to the rear wheels than in 4WD Auto Mode to provide greater power off the line, better control when accelerating on gravel or loose surfaces, and enhanced stability at high speeds. Rear wheel torque transfer is maintained at 50%, meaning up to 50% of available torque is sent to the rear wheels under full-throttle acceleration on dry road surfaces. When in 4WD Lock Mode, torque at the rear wheels is increased by a smaller degree through corners than with 4WD Auto Mode. This mode is also ideal for more challenging off-road conditions.

Price and service plan

With a price tag of R549 900. The redesigned Mitsubishi Outlander is already available on sale and comes with a full three-year or 100 000 km warranty and a five-year or 90 000 km service plan. Service intervals are set at 15 000 km.
