Adventurer sets off on world tour

WOLFSBURG, Germany – Adventurer Rainer Zietlow and his team have set off on record-bid trip - a 23 000km journey from 'Down Under' Melbourne to 'On Top' St Petersburg in northern Russia in a diesel VW Touareg.

Zietlow plans to cover the route from the earth’s southernmost city to its northernmost opposite number in less than three weeks.

Zietlow began his journey on July 26, 2012 and during the course of his odyssey will cross many climate zones and will have to withstand extreme heat, torrential rain, sandstorms and high altitudes.

Zietlow's Touareg is powered by a three-litre, 165kW, V6 turbodiesel engine and has a host of extra kit such as roll cage and an extra fuel tank. In the style of dispatch riders of yesteryear, Zietlow is aiming to deliver a letter from the mayor of Melbourne to the top city official of St Petersburg.

Melbourne is through 2012 celebrating the 175th anniversary of its naming and has been twinned with St Petersburg since 1989.
