A 38-year-old man has become the latest victim of a car hijacking caught on tape.

In the 40-second video, a white sedan can be seen approaching a parked car before one of the assailants jumps out of the back seat.

The crime took place on Tuesday morning in Sherwood, Durban.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala said the victim was parked outside a school when three armed suspects accosted him.

"The suspects forced the victim into the back seat and drove off with his white BMW 330i," Captain Gwala told News24.

She added that the victim was left in the Lamontville area, more than 15km away.

No arrests have been made and the vehicle has not yet been recovered.

A case of car hijacking was opened at Sydenham Police Station for investigation.

According to the 2016/17 crime statistics, 45.8 cars were hijacked per day. The highest number recorded in the past ten years, said Africa Check.

Road safety organisation Arrive Alive has provided these tips, if confronted:

  • Do not lose your temper, threaten or challenge the hijacker;
  • Do exactly as told by the hijackers;
  • Do not resist, especially if the hijacker has a weapon. Surrender your vehicle and move away;
  • Gather as much information as possible without posing a threat; and
  • Contact emergency services - SAPS: 10111 or 112 on any cellphone network.
