As it happened: #GuguZuluMemorial at Kyalami

Kyalami, Gauteng - The memorial service for South African motorsport legend, Gugu Zulu, is being held at the Kyalami racetrack in Gauteng.

A life cut short

Gugu Zulu and his wife, Letshego, attempted to summit Mount Kilimanjaro earlier in July 2016. Sadly, Zulu did not survive the attempt and passed away on July 18.

Zulu and Letshego were climbing Mount Kilimanjaro for the 2016 edition of Trek4Mandela.

Wheels24's Sean Parker is attending the memorial service of the late Gugu Zulu at Kyalami racetrack (scroll below the live tweets to view the video of the memorial service).

Speaker: "Not many people lived the way Gugu lived."
Mr André Ross steps up to remember Gugu.
Mr Ross remembers Gugu's competitive soul and how he always enjoyed having fun with everything.
Mr Ross: "(Gugu) was a man who used his success to help others."
Mr Ross: "Gugs, you were a man who saw no colour! Not even your own."
Mr Stevel Marc: "Gugu, you're a rock star now. Mandela cool."
Mr Marc: "You captured the hearts of a nation like politicians can only dream of."
Mr Marc plays a voice note Gugu had sent him from Kilimanjaro, saying: "This is happily ever after."
Next speaker is Mr William Mokgopo, from the Diepsloop Mountain bike academy.
Mr Mokgopo: "Gugu just couldn't help having a smile all the time."
Musical tribute by Loyiso Gala.
Next speaker: Mr Thomas Schaefer, chairman and managing director of Volkswagen SA.
Mr Schaefer: "We are deeply saddened to have lost Gugu Zulu. A man who has embodied so much of the new South Africa."
Mr Scheafer: "We've lost a special member of the VW family. Rest in peace."
Next speaker: Mr Stephen Watson, from the SA Motorsport fraternity.
Mr Watson: "You (once) made it clear that you would race in your socks, if needed be."
Mr Watson: "In your daily life, no one was below you. You would not ask anyone to do something that you would not do yourself."
