Here's how Datsun SA uses flower power to make the country smile

"Flowers always make people better, happier and more helpful; they are sunshine, food and medicine for the soul.” - American horticulturalist, Luther Burbank.

Flowers are one way to make a statement and they're able to garner a huge smile from those who receive them. NetFlorist knows that and so does Datsun it seems.

The automaker has partnered with the online flower delivery company to spread smiles for hundreds of kilometres each day since 2016 with a fleet of 60 pink-clad vehicles.

Datsun South Africa invited a select few to experience the massive operation that is NetFlorist. The company is SA's leading online and floral delivery company and it's really no surprise why. It delivers up to 500 arrangements a day, and that's just flower orders, while they send out more than a couple hundred online orders too.

Valentine's Day 2018 saw a whopping 32 000 orders. The 60 Datsun Go+ panel vans in its fleet conduct five trips a day, each covering a distance of 700 to 1200km daily.

What's even more fascinating is the fact that South Africa is the only country in the world, says Datsun, that operates GO panel vans. The customisation is done locally.

The automaker continues to be popular in South Africa since its comeback in 2014; so far in 2018, the automaker has sold an average of 600 units each month.

Ryan Bacher, NetFlorist managing director, says: "Partnering with Datsun has been a godsend. Fuel efficient, practical, spacious and affordable, the Datsun GO makes for the perfect, reliable, budget-friendly vehicle."

SA's most affordable car

In 2017, the annual Kinsey Report found for the third year in a row that the Datsun GO was South Africa’s most affordable car. The Kinsey Report is regarded as the most comprehensive survey of motoring costs and covers vehicles available locally.

Under the category of City Cars — entry level cars for first time buyers — the Datsun GO was named the best overall in the service, repair and crash parts sections respectively.

The affordability of parts together with class-leading fuel consumption makes the total cost of ownership of the GO one of the best in South Africa.

Datsun says since so many people are being pro-active about Valentine's Day and are already placing orders online in advance for 2019, the automaker has thought up a few flowery puns for you to use in your cards:

I hope thistle show you how much I love you
I never want you to leaf me
Hey bud, how’s it growing?
Aloe you vera much
We’re mint to be.

It's pretty amazing to experience where a bunch of flowers comes from, and the amount of love and care that goes into each special parcel or bouquet. From the moment the flowers are delivered from suppliers to the NetFlorist mother ship in Paulshof, outside Johannesburg, to the moment it's placed into the Datsun for delivery.

NetFlorist's head designer took us under his wing and tried to show us how to make a floral arrangement in a quick crash course. First the flowers are picked for each order, then each individual items are cleaned before the work begins on the design. It's rather therapeutic when you're creating something so special for an absolute stranger whom you know will be immensely happy once they receive their delivery.

It's fascinating to watch the operation from call order to being placed in the 'driver's lane' to be picked up for delivery and sent off in the pink Datsuns.

On occasions such as Valentine's, Secretary or Boss' Day, there are a mattresses piled up in one work area and staff actually sleep over to roll out thousands of orders.

So, should you ever be lucky enough to receive a bouquet, take some time to think of the person who created it just for you.
