A Gauteng man was arrested on November 14 for using an unlicensed .45 Colt firearm as a gear lever in his vehicle.

Randfontein police spokesperson Sergeant Carmen Hendricks said the firearm was discovered during a crime-prevention operation called 'O Kae Molao' in the township of Mohlakeng, and after receiving an anonymous tip-off about the suspect.

Hendricks said the motorist was arrested for being in possession of an unlicensed firearm.

A photograph of the firearm shows it to be a left-hand drive vehicle.

According to the Randfontein Herald, "(the suspect) has already appeared in the Randfontein Magistrates’ Court, where the case was struck off the roll pending the ballistics report," Hendricks said.

Hendricks also told the Randfontein Herald: "Violence is the leading cause of death in South Africa and firearms are the cause of some deaths. As the South African Police Service we must make sure that our community is safe and protected."

News24 reported that more than 600 arrests were made during August as part of the Gauteng SAPS's Operation O Kae Molao.

According to police spokesperson Kay Makhubele, the operation is conducted every week around Gauteng and depends on the information gathered by its intelligence unit.
