Jaguar Land Rover has become the latest manufacturer to temporarily shut down its facility as the coronavirus pandemic grips the world.

Production at its UK manufacturing facilities will be suspended over next week, and the company says "it intends to resume in the week of 20 April subject to review of the rapidly-changing circumstances".

The BBC reports that in the UK, 144 people with the virus have died, and 3269 people have tested positive for Covid-19. Friday 20 March marks the last day of school for most children as the government responds to the pandemic.

JLR plants in Brazil and India still operating

As a responsible business, Jaguar Land Rover is operating in line with advice from the NHS and Public Health England to minimise the spread of the coronavirus, while implementing plans to safeguard its business continuity.

The company says it will work towards an orderly return to production once conditions permit. Currently, Jaguar Land Rover's manufacturing plants in Brazil and India continue operating. The company’s joint venture plant in China reopened in the week of February 24, as life begins to get back to normal in the country.

Although the company’s focus must be on its business and responsibilities to employees, Jaguar Land Rover is doing whatever it can to support its communities through the current situation.

The company’s thoughts are with those directly affected by COVID-19 and with the healthcare professionals, whose role in combating this virus is appreciated by all.

Locally, BMW has shut down its plant in Rosslyn, Pretoria for a month as the German company seeks 'to protect employees and their families and to support society' in its fight against the coronavirus.
