BMW SA drops the Springboks

Cape Town - BMW South Africa says it won't renew its contract as one of the official sponsors of the Springbok rugby team.

Diederik Reitsma, spokesperson for BMW, told Netwerk24 on Monday that the automaker will not be renewing its sponsorship when it expires in December 2015.

It's the second lose of a sponsor in a matter of days for the SA rugby team since Absa dropped the Springboks earlier in November.

Why has BMW dumped the Boks?

BMW SA's Guy Kilfoil posted on Twitter: "We are re-focussing our sponsorship strategy in 2016 and beyond in line with our latest range of vehicles and the customer profiles they appeal to.

"We are sad to see the relationship end but it was a purely commercial decision made before Rugby World Cup began."

BMW's five-year sponsorship included the addition of the BMW brand mark to the left leg of the players’ shorts in official matches as well as providing vehicles for the Springboks in South Africa.
