Cape Town - In 2016, a vehicle branded with 'Arrive Alive' stickers was spotted illegally parked in a disabled parking bay. Arrive Alive editor Johan Jonck revealed that vehicle belonged to a taxi association.
Now, a year later, another traffic violation has been captured by what appears to be the same vehicle, according to Jonck. However, it is not yet known if the same person is responsible for both incidents.
The vehicle has no connection to the Arrive Alive Online Initiative or Traffic Authorities in the Eastern Cape.
Dangerous driving
The South African Police Services in the Eastern Cape reported on Sunday that quick responses by local Emergency services "prevented a catastrophe from taking place".
The statement said: "A senior off-duty police officer travelling with a young relative on the R72 from Port Elizabeth was overtaken on a double barrier line at a very dangerous part of the road. Ironically the vehicle was marked with signs 'ARRIVE ALIVE'.
"She immediately alerted authorities on an Emergency "Whatsapp" group. Within a short period, the vehicle that was travelling recklessly and at a high speed was stopped near Alexandria. The driver was in the company of five young children."

SAPS says the driver, in his 40's, was escorted to the local police station and issued an R2500 summons for driving a vehicle on the opposite side of the road causing danger to other road users.
The police further says: "Several fatal accidents were attended to on the same stretch of road recently. Drivers are once again urged to exercise caution on the road and adhere to the road signs and speed limits."
Vehicle impounded
The Eastern Province department of transport has requested the vehicle be impounded until the branding has been removed as it belongs to a taxi association and not to any affiliated transport or safety organisations.

'Negative light'
Jonck says: "It is saddening, especially during transport month, that the conduct of one such lawless individual impersonating a well-known road safety brand is shining a negative light on those committed to making our roads safe!
"We hope that this will be regarded as an extenuating circumstance in sentencing the individual for reckless driving."
