Since 2010 the R23-million Bugatti Veyron Super Sport has held the title 'fastest production car in the world'. TopGear said so...
In April 2013 Guinness World Records stripped the supercar of its title for "breaching the rules” because the car's speed limiter was disconnected before running to 430km/h. The disengagement was apparently done during the run.
The 2010 record attempt, featured on TopGear, was investigated by driving.co.uk. The website reported that the Veyron should not have qualified as a production car‘s "speed restrictor had been deactivated".
'LIMITER DEACTIVATED'
Jaime Strang, PR director of Guinness World Records, said: “It has come to the attention of Guinness World Records that there was an oversight in its adjudication of the 'fastest production car’ which was set in 2010 by the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport.
“As the car’s speed limiter was deactivated, this modification was against the official guidelines. Consequently, the vehicle’s record set at 431.072km/h is no longer valid. Guinness World Records is reviewing this category with expert external consultants to ensure our records fairly reflect achievements in this field.”
The company's rules state that that the car that sets a record must be mechanically identical to those on sale to the public.
If not the Veyron, then what is the world’s fastest production car?
It’s likely the title now reverts to US Shelby SuperCars Ultimate Aero which recorded 412km/h before the Veyron Super Sport came along.
'NOT A HARD BLOW'
Bugatti commented: “Guinness knew the Veyron’s speed limiter was deactivated but that for safety reasons cars subsequently sold to customers would have their speed limiter activated (set at 415km/h).”
"It’s not a hard blow if we lose this title. The Super Sport is more than just a world-record car."
Bugatti said it would be seeking clarification from Guinness World Records.
