Sales will kick of early in 2006 and it will come to South Africa too sometime next year.

Rumours were going around that VW was to badge its new coupe-cabriolet as the Eos, but it seems unlikely as Canon has the rights to this name for its camera line-up.

This new VW drop-top will share its engine line-up with the Golf and Jetta models, which will of course include the GTI's 147 kW 2-litre turbo-charged FSI unit.

However, it seems as if VW could unleash an even hotter version of the car.

Apparently VW is finalising plans to introduce a super R36 model too. This model could have a power output of about 200 kW.

As with its rivals, which include the Megane and 307 coupe-cabriolet models, the car will seat four and use a retractable hardtop.

Ford will also join this niche market in 2006 with a coube-cabriolet model based on the new Focus.

  • VW said on Thursday it plans to launch 10 new car models in the US within the next three to four years, according to the latest edition of the company's newsletter.
