MEXICO CITY, Mexico - Uber has denounced an attack on its drivers and their vehicles in violence-racked Mexico City.
The company reported that a group of thugs bashed cars with clubs and rocks outside the capital's international airport on Tuesday (July 27 2015) and Uber called the attack a violation of "everyone's right to make a living in a dignified way".
ROCK SMASH
Video of the incident on the website of the newspaper La Jornada shows people throwing eggs and flour inside the windows of vehicles. One man smashes a rear window with a large rock; another takes out two side windows of a car.
La Jornada reports the attackers were neighbours and taxi drivers who say Uber vehicles park there to do airport pick-ups. They contend that hurts the community and local taxi drivers.
Mexico City recently issued regulations under which Uber and other cellphone application-based ride services are officially permitted.
