US Volts drive Earth to Mars

DETROIT, USA – Chevrolet Volt owners in the US are getting better fuel consumption data than expected, many saying they are exceeding the estimated ranges claimed by the automaker.

Volt owners are consistently achieving the environmental protection agency (EPA)-estimated mileage of 98MPGe petrol-free miles and many are exceeding it.

In the US, MPGe is a measure of the average distance travelled per unit of energy consumed. The EPA uses it to compare the consumption of alternative fuel vehicles, plug-in electric vehicles and other advanced technology vehicles with the fuel economy of conventional internal combustion vehicles expressed as miles per US gallon of petrol.

EARTH TO MARS

The automaker says, thanks to feedback from owners, that the combined 'mileage' of 241-million combined electric kilometers is equivalent to the distance from Earth to Mars.

A Chevrolet spokesperson said: “When the Volt is fully charged, the power used for driving up to 80km is supplied by the electricity stored in its 16kWh lithium-ion battery. A petrol-fuelled engine kicks in and generates electricity to sustain the battery charge once the battery's energy is depleted.”

Feedback shows owners who regularly charge the vehicle cover about 1456km between fuel fills.

Some of the feedback from Volt owners (distances converted to kilometres):

KILLER MILEAGE

Brent Waldrep of Auburn Hills, Michigan: "I've driven more than 38 000km in my Volt in 21 months and have been to a petrol station twice. The last time, was in August 2012 and I still have about 65% of that tank left. "

Waldreps result is uncharacteristic, but he is not alone.

Larry Read of Canyon Lake, Texas said: "It's been more than 8 050km and I've only filled up once, not including the dealer fill."

Paul Friday of San Jose, California: He reaches about 11 330km between fill-ups and adds about 11.4 litres of petrol to his Volt every three months.

Chevrolet Volt marketing director, Cristi Landy said: "We've seen and heard from our Volt owners that they are achieving fantastic performance numbers with their vehicle as many are beating the EPA label estimates, showing the performance potential of driving electric and having fun doing it."
