Toyota South Africa Motors issued a warning on Tuesday urging would-be prize winners to ignore a new scam using its name.
The new scam, the manufacturer said, involved a cash prize being offered on behalf of Toyota to cell phone owners.
The unsuspecting cell phone user received a text message in which they are informed that they have won a cash prize. “Prizewinners” are then requested to supply their banking details and deposit a certain amount of money into a bank account.
Toyota SA said in a statement that it has reported the scam to the relevant authorities and urged those who received the message to ignore it.
