Toyota SA in global recall fix

CAPE TOWN - Toyota is recalling 7.43 million vehicles in South Africa, US, Japan and Europe due to a faulty electric window switch.

The recall, announced in October 2012, affects more than a dozen models produced from 2005 through 2010. The electric window switch on the driver's side didn't have grease applied evenly during production, causing friction in the switch and sometimes smoke, according to Toyota.

Vehicles involved are the RAV4, Corolla, Yaris, Camry and Auris and SA owners would be contacted.

LUBRICANT FIX

The Japanese automaker embarks on a global voluntary service campaign to improve the operation of certain vehicles’ power window master switch (PWMS).

According to Toyota, "The notchy or sticky operation may be caused by an uneven application of the grease during the switch assembly process at the supplier.

"If the grease is not applied evenly, frequent use of the switch and normal operation may cause the grease to become carbonized and may eventually result in the deterioration of its lubricating properties."

The campaign, which includes SA, involves the application of a special lubricant to the operation of the master switch. According to Toyota, "This will counter possible sticky operation or a malfunctioning of the switch.

"The remedy will involve an inspection, switch disassembly, and application of special fluorine grease. The switch inspection and repair will be performed at no charge to the vehicle owner."

Toyota SA is currently compiling a list of involved vehicles and will contact all vehicle owners affected.
