Toddler Yue Yue's killer jailed

A driver who ran over a toddler in a hit-and-run accident in China has been sentenced to a mere three-and-a-half years in prison, a court spokeswoman told AFP on Thursday.

The death of the two-year-old triggered a major outcry from the public after surveillance footage of the girl being hit twice was posted online.

HIT TWICE

The toddler, nicknamed Yue Yue, was first run over by a van and then a truck, in October 2011. The video shows more than a dozen people walking past the girl as she lay in the street critically injured. A female rubbish collector finally comes to her aid and picked her up and moved her out of the street.

However, the people walking by might not be as heartless as they seem. In an incident close to that time, a man who tried to help an elderly woman after she fell over was prosecuted, apparently because his intervention broke government rules on dealing with accident victims.

LIGHTER SENTENCE

The driver, Hu Jun, was sentenced to three years and six months in prison for accidentally causing the toddler's death by hitting her with his car, AFP reported.

He received a lighter sentence because he voluntarily turned himself into local police after the incident and also paid part of Yue Yue’s medical fees, the China News Service reported.
