VW’s Beetle, which replaced the rear-engined bubble car from the 1960’s, is set to be replaced with a new model in 2012.
A replacement is long overdue for a vehicle that has been around since the 1990's, though its doubtful that it will be called the New New Beetle.
Our spies have revealed the new model undergoing testing.
It’s clear from the images that VW’s Beetle will sport a new front and rear design. The entire profile of the car seems to have been changed from the bulbous front and rear design of the current model. The new model also appears to be longer and lower.
The CEO of VW USA, Stefan Jacoby, said last year that the new Beetle would feature more space for rear passengers, which would explain the increase in length. Jacoby also said the carmaker would be working to increase the vehicle’s masculine appeal.
Engine-wise we expect the German carmaker to carry-over the lineup found in the Jetta to include the following derivatives:
A base model 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine producing 86kW
A 2.5-litre five-cylinder engine,
A 2.0-litre turbocharged TSI engine
A 2.0-litre TDI diesel engine
VW has also hinted at a hybrid model within the new Beetle line-up
