FAMILY TIES: The next-generation X5 will be able to seat seven. Image gallery

What a start into the new year! Here are the very first spy pictures of the all-new BMW X5, shot near the automaker's Munich headquarters on one of the first working days in January.

First impressions are this vehice will grow significantly in length and will feature a longer roof. This is clearly necessary to distance the new X5 from its smaller stablemate, the X3, which itself had to grow a bit to make room for the still-new X1.

The increase in length will give BMW the option to offer a third row of seats, making the future X5 a seven-seater - a feature strongly demanded by the important US market.

The prototype seen in our pictures is powered by a V8 engine but a hybrid will certainly offered, too.

We expect the car to be launched sometime in 2013.
