SPIED! Mercedes-Benz GL

Mercedes-Benz new GL-Class estate/SUV was undergoing testing when our photographers caught up with it.

The Merc is obviously camouflaged - but why was it towing a Smart ForTwo?

The new model GL shows many styling changes and, although camouflaged, you can see changes to the front, among them a new grille and headlights borrowed from the E-Class.

The new GL will be built on a modified version of the German automaker’s next generation ML platform.

SOFTER LOOKS

The new model will sport LED daytime running lights on the bumper and compact light clusters for the tail lights.

Mercedes will also give its next generation GL a “softer” look compared to the current design's more assertive front, with a wider grille.

Engines will likely still be shared with the ML model, such as the three and four-litre diesels and the 5.5 petrol engine all coupled to the brand's 7G-Tronic (seven-speed) transmission.

The next generation GL is due in 2012.

As to the tow rope in our spy pics, presumably they’re testing the towing ability of the new GL? Perhaps the Smart ForTwo is doing is the towing in reverse and the reason the reverse lights aren't on could be the little two-door car needed to catch its breath?
