SPIED! Lexus GS 2012

SPOTTED: Our spy photographers spotted Lexus new GS undergoing testing in Germany.

The current Lexus GS has faded into obscurity within the midsize luxury sedan segment, but in 2011 the Japanese automaker is working on its revival by testing its successor in Germany.

Our spy photographers snapped up images of the new model, and although it sports heavy camouflage Lexus says it intends to take more “risks” with the vehicle’s styling this time round.

The wheelbase on the vehicle appears to be longer, which should open up plenty of rear legroom in the GS. This could be a key factor in its class as German rivals BMW 5 Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class are comparatively huge when it comes to interior space.

The widened track gives the GS prototype a more substantial look than the current model.

It's too early to speculate which engines Lexus will use under the hood of its new sedan, though a fuel-efficient six-cylinder engine will be a must in the wake of tightening global fuel economy standards.

We wouldn't be surprised to see a more powerful version of the current sedan's direct-injected, 3.5-liter V6 - perhaps with forced injection - although only the 3-litre V6 GS300 and the hybrid GS450h are currently sold in South Africa.

Lexus is set to unveil its new GS later in 2011.
