Also known as the MegaCity Vehicle, BMW plans to sell up to 30 000 units in its first full year of sales in 2014. Though both the i3 and the i8 sportscar will be given petrol engines to either boost power (i8) or extend the range (i3), BMW launched the new 'i' sub-brand under the tag line "Born Electric".

Unveiling of the i3 production version along with the i8 hybrid supercar will take place later in 2013. Both will be built at the Leipzig plant and ride on the "LifeDrive architecture" which has an aluminium chassis and a carbon fibre-reinforced plastic passenger cell. The car will produce well over 93kW via electric motors. Described by the automaker as futuristic premium mobility, the i3 is expected to be priced at the equivalent of about R466 000.
