Future models 2012 - 2014

From Audi's A2 revival to Opel's new Astra Cabriolet, we consult our motoring crystal ball and showcase the latest future models.

Audi A2 - 2014

The Audi A2 is set to make a comeback in 2012. The 2nd generation A2 will get rid of the expensive assembly of its older sibling and give way for the more conventional space frame made of steel similar to the A1.

Audi has not released details about the styling of the upcoming A2, but has hinted that the new model will borrow elements from its predecessor with a high one-box design and narrow tracks.

Rupert Stadler, Audi chairman, stated that the electric drivetrain is a top priority for the German automaker and they are also considering extending the range, similar to that of the A1 e-tron, for the upcoming A2. The conventional variants of the A2 will make use of similar A1 petrol and diesel powerplants.



Audi S1 - 2012

Audi is set to take on Mini’s JCW and Fiat’s 500 Abarth with its new S1 planned for 2012. The new model will feature a tweaked version of the 1.4l TFSI engine used in the current Volkswagen Polo GTI producing at least 134kW.

Backing the S1's forced induction engine will be Audi’s latest seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. The S1 was due to be launched in 2010 but Audi decided to delay the new model, due to the fact that Quattro was not available for the new platform yet. The S1 will feature Quattro and will be more powerful than the new A1 136kW 1.4 TFSI S line due in SA in May 2011.

The S1 will look the part thanks to flared wheel arches, 19-inch wheels, and sport the automakers daytime LED headlights.




BMW City-Mini - 2014

The BMW City-Mini (or Mega City) is the German carmakers first in new a line of new vehicles under the electric “i-car” sub-brand. The new City car will feature an electric drivetrain unveiled in the BMW ActiveE Concept at the Detroit Auto Show.

The electric motor is capable of producing 125kW and a torque peak of 250Nm. The liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery has a range of 160km



Opel Astra Cabriolet - 2013

Opel will be introducing a cabriolet version of its popular Astra hatchback in 2013. The Cabrio will based on the Astra SportsTourer and will borrow much in terms of styling from the GTC version.

The new model will most likely sport a fabric roof, rather than the retractable hard top, with one of its main rivals being the new Volkswagen Golf 6 Cabriolet. The new Cabrio, which will sit as the flagship model, is speculated to replace the Astra TwinTop but will be dubbed as a sportier variant. It will be equipped with only two seats and will rival Mini and VW roadsters.

Power choices will be in the form of a 201kW 2.0-liter turbocharged petrol unit and a new 112kW 1.4l turbo petrol engine. A 127kW 2.0l CDTI engine will also be included with the new model range.




Subaru Coupe - 2012

Co-developed with the Toyota FT-86, the Subaru Coupe should be mechanically very similar differ while differing radically from the FT-86's styling.

Subaru’s coupe will be rear-wheel drive and use a sport a 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine capable of producing 200 and 250 and mated to a six-speed transmission. The new model is set to make its debut in 2012. Check out all our future models here!
