Single-seater titles to the line at Zwartkops

ZWARTKOPS, Gauteng - Nicholas van Weely won the final round of the 2014 SA Single Seaters championship at Zwartkops Raceway on Saturday (Nov 1)  - the last of the Super Series events for 2014.

Which gave him the championship.

In the Midas Formula 1600 category, Scott Temple turned his championship lead into a 2014 championship title. He played it safe at the final event, settling for second in each race to ensure he took the title.

FINAL RACE BATTLE

Both champions had to fight right up to the final round before the title was decided.

The Formula VW battle was between Van Weely and Robert Wolk with the pair entering the final round on identical points. Victory in Race 1 skewed the championship fight in Wolk's favour but Van Weely winning Race 2 pushed it back in his favour. A jumped-start penalty for defending champion Wolk in Race 2 cemented Van Weely's win for the season.

Third in the Formula VW championship went to Werner Scholtz who held off Jason Campos to take the last of the podium steps by only five points.

Temple entered the final round as the F1600 favourite with an 11-point lead over his nearest rival, Keegan Campos, who won both races and first overall for the event but it wasn’t enough to unseat Temple.

Bevan Williams rounded off the top three F1600 overall results for the season. The Class B championship had been decided at the penultimate round at Killarney. There Rick Morris clinched the title with second.

At the final round of the season Allen Meyer (15) won two races in Class B of the Midas F1600 category, his first in this category and a high not for his season.

The South African Single-Seater racers now go into an off-season of hard work and preparation as they aim for the start of the 2015 championship and some more wheel-to-wheel racing action around South Africa.
