Johannesburg - People were arrested for traffic offences, others were killed on the roads, as South Africa paid tribute to Freedom Day 2013 on April 27.
A spokesman for the Road Traffic Management Corporation said a driver was trapped at 217km/h in a 120km/h zone on the N1 near Mokopane, Limpopo.
SPEEDERS HELD
"It is alleged that the suspect, 39, became abusive towards the officers when he was arrested," the spokesman said. "He was held at Mokopane police station until his court appearance on Monday (April 29, 2013)."
In the Eastern Cape, a 35-year-old man was arrested after he was caught at 207km/h in a 120km/h zone en route to Port Elizabeth. The spokesman said: "Allegedly he said the car was so smooth that he did not realise it was travelling at such a high speed. He also remained in custody until Monday."
SLOWER PACE
Things were a little slower in the Western Cape. The drivers were arrested for travelling at 188km/h and 173km/h in a 120km/h zone in Brackenfell.
Traffic officials screened 543 drivers for alcohol but only seven were arrested.
Seven people were killed and three injured in collisions over the weekend in Limpopo, two of them pedestrians. Another two people died in a head-on collision, presumably between vehicles on the R101 near Modimolle on Friday evening (April 26).
Three died and three others were injured when five vehicles collided on the N1 outside Polokwane when one car's tyre blew and caused the driver to lose control of the car, which caused a chain of collisions between the other cars.
