BERLIN, Germany - The wife of Michael Schumacher believes the multiple Formula 1 champion is improving after emerging from his coma and being moved to a Swiss hospital.

Corinna Schumacher, in her first public comments since Schumacher's skiing fall on December 29 2013, told German magazine Neue Post, the improvement in the health of her husband was encouraging.

She said: "It's getting better, slowly certainly, but in any case it's improving."

Schumacher spent 170 days in hospital in the French city of Grenoble after cracking his skull on a rock while skiing at an Alpine resort. Almost all of that time was spent in a medically induced coma and he lost a considerable amount of weight.

After being coaxed back to consciousness the seven-times Formula 1 champion was on June 16 2014 flown to a hospital in Lausanne Switzerland, that specialises in care for brain injuries.

Experts at the Swiss neurological rehabilitation unit stimulate patients at its "Jardin des Sens" (garden of the senses) by exposing them to water, scents and other elements. The area has been cordoned off to prevent media access.

Schumacher, the most successful F1 driver of all time, has had several brain operations since his fall in the resort of Meribel and is expected to face a long recovery.

Schumacher's agent, Sabine Kehm, said on June 2014 that medical records purported to be his had been offered for sale and officials were investigating the theft.

Criminal charges and damages would be sought against anyone involved in the illegal sale or publication of his confidential records, she said at the time.
