Sanral: 'Error in our prices'

JOHANNESBURG - The South African National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) says "an error has crept in" when the e-tolling prices were revealed on Monday, August 5 and published on Wheels24.

The agency says only a fraction of users of the Gauteng Road Improvement Project (GFIP) will pay the maximum monthly cost of using the roads, capped at R450 for those who have registered and use an e-tag.

Sanral claims to have used data from its toll collection system to calculate these figures; the initial calculations done over a two-month period. However, the system has been live for a year and these conclusions were apparently confirmed as accurate over the longer period, too.

Of the 2.5-million vehicles checked, only 4700 would have reached the R450-a-month cap, according to the agency's data.

AMENDED PRICES

The original prices claimed only 0.59% would pay R300 - R450 and only 1.82% R201 - R300. If they can't even get the initial date correct, how is Sanral going to manage this system when (if?) at ever gets rolling?

This is what Sanral’s plate recognition system now says drivers will pay monthly:
• 82.83% will pay less than R100
• 10.10% will pay R101 - R200
• 4.03% will pay R201 - R300 (previously only 1.82%)
• 1.82% will pay R300 - R400
and has added:
• 0.63% will pay R400 - R450
• 0.59% will pay R450

Wheels24 readers sent us many comments in response to Sanral's claims and believe us, they ain't happy...

Vusi Nzapheza By Jove, when will Sanral stop spinning and understand that cash-strapped motorists dont wanna pay the extra tax? And when will this government understand that this is bound to costy them next year?

Sharon Muller: Sanral must also reveal what percentage of motor vehicles could not be traced because of no registration plates or illegal numbers and tell us how they will address that problem. We will end up paying for those who break the law as usual.

Philip Hayward: If only 0.59% will pay the R450 cap, why don't they reduce the R450 cap to a more reasonable amount?

Gaylord TheAtheist: 82 % of people will pay less than R100 per month. So for the average user, who uses the highway on a daily basis, that should work out to about only one barrier each way? Take it like this R2.50 per barrier times 40 gives you R100. I know I use the highway when I have a bit of distance to travel and what I've seen is that the average barriers are actually very close together. Going anywhere I would pass under about three to four. So please don't insult my intelligence and say that 82% will pay less than R100, the average user will be using the highway to drive from PTA to JHB.

And tell me something else Sanral, why only one barrier from Soweto to JHB but from PTA to JHB, well, numerous?"

Esme Nel: Taxi associations will burn the gantries if they were made to pay and the government knows this, which is why they are exempt from paying! As for debit orders, I only have one and that is for my bond, all the rest I pay manually, no one gets access to my bank account!"
