SPIED: Ranger double cab goes SUV

Ford’s next Ranger SUV is undergoing winter testing in Europe. A prototype of the upcoming model was spotted by Wheels24's spy photographers.

The Ranger-based SUV will be bolstered by the addition of a new seven-seat variant.

The SUV has Ranger roots, especially front and rear, though the final product will have interior and exterior design changed from the Edge and Everest concepts.

Ford has also carefully obscured the prototype's rear suspension, disguising a likely move to a coil-sprung live setup.

There are also two lines on both sides of the rear doors – a possible pop-up sunshade, perhaps? More likely they demarcate the area for an extra row of seats.

According to Ford, the new model will "set an SUV benchmark" while delivering "great off-road capability and toughness."

The Ranger SUV will be unveiled in the second half of 2014. Unfortunately it looks like Ford has no plans to launch the new SUV in SA.
