X6, 5 Series Gran Turismo, 4 Series Gran Coupe... BMW is well-known for creating niches in the automotive world though our spy photographers have captured what will be the first in a new family of vehicles from the automaker.
It's called the FAST, and no, that's not a reflection of its speed but rather the automaker's new series of vehicles - Family Active Sports Tourer.
The FAST is set to slot between the new 2 Series Active Tourer and the X1.
FAST, CAT, JOY?
It's based a new platform, already used in the new Mini and 2 Series Active Tourer, and is planned to be launched in late 2015. According BMW, it blends sporty touring looks, MPV flexibility and SUV 'solidity'.

BMW, by 2020, hopes to assemble a million front-wheel drive BMW and Mini models annually. To achieve this, the automaker is relying on its FAST which joins the automaker's series of automotive acronyms - SAV (Sport Activity Vehicle), PAV (Progressive Activity Vehicle, CAT (Compact Activity Tourer) and JOY (Compact Sports Commuter Concept)... no, it's lost in translation from German.
The FAST platform will be powered by turbocharged three and four-cylinder-engines. Expect all-wheel-drive as an option. Oh and a PIH (plug-in hybrid).
