New details have emerged about the next BMW M3 as British car magazine, Auto Express, recently sat down for an interview with Dr Friedrich Nitschke - the managing director of BMW M GmbH.

The executive was reluctant to discuss specifics but said the next-generation M3 would have a "bigger focus on very low fuel consumption."

That's a bit vague,but the magazine says the M4 will feature a tri-turbocharged 3.3 six-cylinder engine capable of 335kW.

Additionally, we can expect assertive styling and a lightweight body that adopts carbon fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) components.

President of BMW North America, Ludwig Willisch confirmed that the next M3 will feature an inline six layout - the same layout that will be used for the M4.

Willisch also said that, at some point, BMW was considering a V6 engine for the next M3, but in the end, this choice was dropped.

Ludwig Willisch also confirmed that the next M3 will be lighter, faster, more powerful, and more efficient than the current M3.
