• The local new vehicles sales market saw its first full month of sales since February.
• The motor industry has been hard hit by the effect of the coronavirus pandemic.
• We focus on new car sales for ultra-luxury brands such as Porsche, Maserati, Ferrari and Bentley
There were some green shoots in the motor industry in June as new vehicle sales improved.
Of the total reported industry sales of 31 867 vehicles across all segments, an estimated 29 100 units, or 91.3%, represented dealer sales.
It's a big improvement on figures published in the last three months as the country was under a hard lockdown and most industries were brought to a standstill.
Wheels24 reported that Mercedes-Benz emerged as the automaker who exported the most number of vehicles in June 2020. While Toyota sold the most vehicles in the month with 8442 units.
The National Treasury expects the economy to shrink by 7.2% this year which Naamsa suggests will keep the demand for new vehicles under severe pressure.
We've turned the microscope on the luxury brands who usually sell low-volumes compared to other manufacturers.
The five brands on our list are Porsche, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Maserati, and Bentley. The German brand is out in front with 109 units sold.
Wheels24's Janine Van der Post says: "Porsche has sold 109 cars and Ferrari has moved 15 units off their showroom floors in June. While this number might be low in comparison to high-volume sellers, it's still an incredible feat for an exotic car brand like Ferrari. It's also encouraging to see since the global pandemic has hit economies across all sectors not only in South Africa, but around the world."
