Toyota leads the way: 24.9% market share in SA, Hilux remains local bakkie king

With a total of 10 688 vehicles sold, Toyota grabs a 24.9% market share in South Africa during May 2018.

The Hilux, which has been SA’s best-selling vehicle for more than 40 years, achieved sales of 3338 units in May.

Also making meaningful contributions to the automaker's 24.9% market were segment-leading performances by Quantum (1482), Fortuner (1102), RAV4 (705) and Avanza (390). The perennial trio of Corolla/Auris/Quest registered a reputable 1 228 units while the Etios amassed a total of 908 sales.

Toyota still on top

Calvyn Hamman, Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Toyota South Africa, says: "The fact that 9 222 out of a total sales of 10 688 came through our dealer channel is remarkable.

May sales also held steady for a selection of specialist Toyota models, including the Land Cruiser 79 Pick-Up, gaining 217 new owners; as well as the Land Cruiser 200 and Land Cruiser Prado registering sales of 104 and 94, respectively.

Commenting on May sales, the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (Naamsa) says this month’s vehicle sales at 42 984 show an improvement of 1 022 vehicles or 2.4% from the 41 962 vehicles sold in the same month last year.

Overall, out of the total reported Industry sales of 42 984 vehicles, an estimated 37 370 units or 87.0% represented dealer sales, an estimated 7.3% represented sales to the vehicle rental industry, 3.7% to industry corporate fleets and  2% to government, says Naamsa.
