Though new vehicle sales have been slow in 2019 thus far, one car showed no signs of letting up as it took charge of the passenger car market - the Volkswagen Polo Vivo.

From January to April, the Polo Vivo racked up a sales figure of 10 001 units - almost a fourth of the 39 674 units sold by all the vehicles in our top ten category.

Such was the Polo Vivo’s success that it trumped the bigger Polo by some margin; the latter only managing 6900 units over the first four months of 2019.

Big and small

The rest of the top ten lists consist of a mixture between big and small vehicles, all from different price brackets. If anything, it’s an indication of the strong purchasing options our local car pool has to offer.

In third place is the ultra-popular Toyota Fortuner on 3720 units, followed by the Hyundai Grand i10 (3516 units). Interestingly, the Fortuner and Grand i10 are worlds apart in execution and purpose but have traded top ten slots since 2018.

Renault’s Kwid amassed a sales figure of 3141 units, some 300 units clear of the Toyota Etios (2832 units). The Ford EcoSport managed to secure seventh place on 2745 units, ahead of the Toyota RAV4 on 2362 units. The all-new RAV4 arrived little over a month ago and that gave the compact SUV a huge boost.

The Ford Figo sold off 2310 units, while the Datsun Go rounds off the top ten with 2147 units.

Keen readers will notice that the Toyota Corolla has not been added to this list. With the new Corolla coming to market in hatchback form, the collective sales figure between the previous Corolla/Auris/Quest are no more and is Toyota reporting sales figures for its new Corolla and current Quest separately. For interest’s sake: the Corolla/Auris/Quest had a collective total sales figure of 5575 units; which would have placed it in third place on our list.
