The Toyota Hilux remained the No.1 selling vehicle in South Africa following another strong showing in April. Kicking off the second term of 2019, the Hilux ended the month on 2411 units sold, more than 770 units clear of the Ford Ranger in second place.

The Ranger, the only other bakkie to really keep the Hilux on its toes in terms of sales, managed to sign off 1635 units. Overall, it’s been a dismal month for light commercial vehicles.

NP200 drops it

Following a stint in the top three that’s been coming on since late 2018, the Nissan NP200 also had to bend the knee to a month in which sales has been hard to come by. It did secure fourth spot behind the Isuzu D-Max/KB (1242 units) but its 715 is some way down compared to the 1000-plus units it has been racking up the last couple of months.

Another Nissan, the NP300/Hardbody, slots into fifth place with 515 units sold.

The Mahindra Scorpio Pik-up remained constant and did the Indian automaker manage to sell 208 units last month. It was followed by the Nissan Navara (177 units) who opted to trade its customary tenth place for seventh. GWM’s Steed goes eighth on 156 units, followed by the Land Cruiser Pick-up on 139 units.

Volkswagen’s Amarok rounds out the top ten this month on 115 units sold.
