SA car sales | VW's Polo products overshadow passenger car sales in May 2020

accreditation

• Polo and Polo Vivo best-selling passenger cars

• Suzuki S-Presso makes Top 10 list

• Five VW cars in Top 10

The Volkswagen Polo and Polo Vivo were the two top-selling passenger cars in May 2020. The duo sold 668 and 636 units, respectively, and was aided by three other VW products.

The T-Cross sold 300 units, followed by the Polo sedan (291 units) and Tiguan (203 units) - the latter rounding out the top ten.

Other top-selling cars include the newly launched Suzuki S-Presso on 283 units, and the Renault Kwid on 212 units.

South Africa's new car market took a beating in April 2020, but the relaxing of rules to allow the sale of vehicles helped to turn fortunes around. It can be assumed that new vehicle sales will continue the positive uptake in June under lockdown level 3.

Wheels24's Janine Van der Post says: "Seeing these numbers, albeit lower than usual, ignites the ray of hope we have been holding on to, and hopefully the industry can slowly begin to recover and pick up the pieces brought on by Covid-19.

"There's no way of making up for April 2020, but we look forward. I think Kia deserves a special mention with 170 Selto SUVs sold, Haval with 256 models, and Porsche with 118. Lamborghini also sold four new models, despite it being a single-digit number, prices speak volumes and it shows there'll always be a market for exotics, even when the economy is in crisis."
