accreditation

Cape Town - The Volkswagen Polo Vivo and Toyota Fortuner led the sales charts for passenger cars at the end of 2017.

The Vivo, which led from the front each month of the last year, sold almost 5000 units more than the second-placed Fortuner, but finished the year as the third best-selling vehicle overall behind the Toyota Hilux and Ford Ranger.

Big numbers

From January and December 2017, the VW Polo Vivo sold a massive 28 402 units, averaging at 2367 units per month.

The Fortuner, a perennial favourite among SA car buyers, found 23 646 new owners - the most for any SUV. The VW Polo sold 22 916 units in third place, ahead of the Toyota Corolla/Auris/Quest (19 264 units).

Another Toyota, the budget-beating Etios, closed its account on 14 686 units in fifth place, managing to stave off a charge by the Ford Fiesta. The Fiesta found 11 446 new owners, ahead of the only other Ford in the top ten, the EcoSport, on 9921 units (seventh place).

Renault’s Kwid made it into the eighth slot with its 8026 units,  ahead of the Toyota Rav4 (7634 units) and Volkswagen Golf (6161 units).
