  • New car sales still under pressure
  • Most luxury carmakers post single digit sales
  • Total passenger car sales over 9000 mark

Slowly but surely the South African motor industry is restarting its engine after the restrictions were lifted to Level 3 during the government-implemented lockdown.

The temporary closure of the industry has been devastating, with just 574 vehicles sold in April. Mercifully, the measures were relaxed for new car vehicle sales, and according to Naamsa there were 9019 passenger cars sold in May.

We're focusing on several of the luxury carmakers sales figures from last month and it shows a runaway lead for German manufacturer Porsche, followed by Bentley, Lamborghini, and Maserati.

Ferrari failed to register any sales according to the data supplied by Naamsa. Wheels24's Janine van der Post says: 'Porsche with 118 deserves special mention. Lamborghini also sold four new models, despite it being a single-digit number, prices speak volumes and it shows there'll always be a market for exotics, even when the economy is in crisis.'
