Cape Town - The Toyota Land Cruiser 200 was the number one selling luxury SUV in April 2017.

The Toyota found 82 new owners; outselling its nearest competitor by 20 units.

Even out

The Range Rover/Range Rover Sport (62 units) and the Toyota Prado (46 units) were the second and third best sellers for the month. The top three SUVs suffered a sales knock, but the rest of the field largely continued with their sales trend.

Volvo's XC90, in part due to an overall sales recession this past month, leaped up to fourth place with 36 units. The Porsche Cayenne was fifth on 35 units, while the Jaguar F-Pace, in sixth place, found 31 new owners.

Jeep's Grand Cherokee sold the seventh most units on 28, while the Audi Q7 follows on 23.

Volkswagen sold 18 of its Touareg SUV, and the Porsche Macan rounds out the top 10 on 13 units.

On why sales took a slump Naamsa (National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of SA) said: "The lower sales could be attributed to the proliferation and configuration of public holidays during the month. In 2017, the Easter holidays fell during the month of April, whilst in 2016 they fell during the month of March.

"Following the modest improvement in new vehicle sales experienced during the first three months of 2017, the outlook for the balance of the year had turned negative on the back of the extra-ordinary political events at the end of March 2017 and early April 2017."
