Luxury SUVs: BMW, Toyota battling for top spot

accreditation

Perhaps one of the best indicators that South Africa’s new vehicle market is in good stead, is the luxury SUV segment.

Month after month automakers like BMW, Toyota, and Jaguar Land Rover report strong sales figures for vehicles that, in the most cases, retails for just under, or way over, the R1-million mark.

Over the first four months of 2019 there is little to choose between the top three and are they separated by only 17 units.

BMW looks good

The BMW X5 leads the luxury SUV charge on 433 units, followed very closely by the Toyota Land Cruiser 200 on 429 units. The Toyota Prado is in third place on 416 units.

The Range Rover/RR Sport is in fourth place on 364 units, ahead of the Land Rover Discovery on 200 units. Volvo’s XC90 is sixth place with 134 units sold, three ahead of the Jeep Grand Cherokee on 131 units. The Range Rover Velar is in eighth place on 129 units sold.

The Volkswagen Touareg (103 units) and Jaguar F-Pace (80 units) round out the top ten.

In total, the top ten selling large luxury SUVs registered a total sales figure of 1986 units over the discussed period.
