Luxury SUVs in SA: Toyota's Land Cruiser proves popular in August

The Toyota Land Cruiser 200 beat its sibling, the Prado, to grab the top spot for large SUVs in South Africa at the end of August 2018.

The large 200 sold 109 units off to eager customers, while the Prado missed out on the top spot by a single unit - 108 SUVs units sold. The other regular contender for top honours in the SUV segment, the Range Rover/RR Sport, slots into third place with 96 units.

Champion climbs

Former South African Car of the Year champion, the Volvo XC90, moved from the bottom half of our top ten list to reach fourth with a very commendable 62 units. Another best-seller, the Land Rover Discovery, sold the fifth most vehicles with 56 units.

Volkswagen’s Touareg managed to go sixth with 55 units to see off competition from the Range Rover Velar (43 units). The Audi Q7 sold the seventh most vehicles last month on 26 units; five clear of the Jaguar F-Pace’s 21 units.

The Lexus LX, the Japanese automaker’s big SUV, rounds out the top ten on 14 units.

XC60 flies Volvo flag high

The medium-sized luxury SUV market also saw a fierce battle for top honours. However, it was the Volvo XC60 that walked away with its name at the top following a sales figure of 92 units for August 2018.

The Jaguar E-Pace grabbed second place with 76 units, ahead of the Volvo XC40 (65 units). Audi’s Q5, top seller in July 2018, found favour with 72 new owners.

The Audi Q3 sold off 67 units in fifth place, followed by the Land Rover Discovery Sport (42 units) and Range Rover Evoque (41 units).

The Lexus NX sold 20 units in eighth place, ahead of its stablemate, the RX, on 14 units.

Alfa Romeo’s Stelvio completes the top ten with 3 units.
