Hyundai SA sprints off the block with sales: here's why consumers are buying Korean cars

It's a gruelling, slow transition has the auto industry slowly resumes sales after lockdown Level 5 and 4, but the Korean automaker has had a terrific comeback in May.

Vehicle sales are nowhere near its usual numbers we're used to seeing in the monthly Naamsa reports, but one automaker seems to be almost right on track.

Hyundai had a stellar month in May with 1279 vehicles sold under its passenger car banner.

The little Grand i10 proved to be most popular in the Hyundai stable with 421 units sold. The small city car's pricing starts from R178 900 for the 1.0-litre Motion model with 48kW and 98Nm.

The numbers might seem tiny, but it's more than sufficient to get around town. Hyundai is also the only automaker with a seven-year or 200 000km manufacturer warranty, and that's the kind of peace-of-mind assurance consumers are looking for when purchasing a new vehicle.

The Hyundai i20 sold 265 units, while the Tucson found 235 new owners, and the Venue 177.

Considering the low numbers across the board, Hyundai is one of only a few automakers who tallied some good numbers in May. What is it about the Korean automaker that makes consumers flock to the brand?

Stanley Anderson, sales and operations director of Hyundai Automotive South Africa, shed some light with Wheels24: 

"Our sales total for May was really encouraging under the present circumstances. As with the overall industry, our sales for 2020 will be less than last year, but Hyundai aims at gaining market share in the current conditions.

"Our web site traffic has increased during the lockdown period, and the number of our online leads showed encouraging growth too.

"Hyundai has kept a presence in terms of marketing during the lockdown period, and our dealers got out of the blocks very early. They maintained contact with their customers, and made appointments as soon as trading was possible. All of this helped to reach a very decent sales total.

"Another factor that benefits the Hyundai brand is our vast number of choices from a comprehensive range of vehicles in the right pricing brackets. This is important at a time when we expect a buying downtrend due to financial constraints. Furthermore, we offer a seven-year or 200 000km warranty on our cars, which gives our customers extra peace of mind.

"We also offer considerable trade assistance for our customers in these times – including a R15 000 cashback offer on the current Grand i10; a R20 000 offer on the i20 1.2 Motion manual model; R30 000 cashback on an Accent and R50 000 assistance on a Tucson."
