SEPANG, Malaysia - Red Bull struggled in pre-season testing and its four-times F1 champion Sebastian Vettel retired during the season-opening Australian GP won by Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg.
Team owner Dietrich Mateschitz, however, believes Red Bull will be competitive in time for the Bahrain GP, the third race of the 2014 season on April 6.
Mateschitz said: "I'm confidentit will happen quickly and that we will catch up with Mercedes by the third race."
RENAULT TO BLAME
Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo was second but was later disqualified for a fuel-flow rate infringement. The team has appealed against the ruling.
Mateschitz said the team's current problem were "exclusively" with the Renault engine.
The Formula 1 season will meanwhile continue with the 2014 Malaysian GP on March 30 and will head for Bahrain on April 6.
