• 2014 Tow Car Awards
• Tested by experts
• Five classes
• Results to be announced in June 2014
LONDON, England - Over 55 new vehicles vehicles ranging from the Fiat 500L to the new Range Rover Sport will be put through a series of punishing tests at the Motor Industry Research Association (MIRA) proving ground in the annual Tow Car awards.
Choosing a car for towing is critical for road safety. Using the renowned MIRA proving ground provides judges with a safe but extremely demanding venue to put cars through a series of tests.
TOUGH TEST
The tests include high-speed stability, emergency braking and hill starts. Judges will rate vehicles on practical features such as boot space and running costs. Experts from different publications will adjudicate the 2014 event.
Vehicles will be split into five "weight" groups and matched with a trailer or caravan loaded to its recommended safe towing weight (85% of the cars' kerb weight) or its maximum permitted towing weight if that is less.
To reflect car-buying trends and to prove you don’t have need to own a 4x4 for safe towing, the competition includes special award categories such as Best Green Tow Car, Best Ultra-light Tow Car and Best Budget 4x4.
President of the Camping and Caravaning Club magazine, Julia Bradbury, said: "I don’t think people realise how tough and comprehensive the testing is for this competition."
Tow Car editor of Practical Caravan magazine, David Motton, said: "We have a very busy week and an impressive list of entries from small cars and small engines to 4x4's and hybrids. Our testing is extremely comprehensive and is bound to deliver some interesting results, so stay tuned for further details."
