Heavy summer downpours across South Africa in early January 2014 caused widespread flooding - the N1 near Laingsburg in the Karoo closed. The UK has also been devastated by storms and floods.

The US has had a mini-ice age and  floods are likely when the thaw sets in. Whatever, what should you do when deep water is blocking your way.

What if you have no choice but drive through a section of flooded road to get to your destination?

British insurance firm GEM Motoring Assist has produced a video with some pretty darn good advice...

Video: How to drive through a flood

The video advocates postponement of your trip if heavy rain is falling but, if that’s not an option, the clip has helpful advice on dealing with heavily flooded areas, guidance for flood warnings and road blocks (are you allowed to drive past the warnings?) and even shows how to reduce the risk of stalling if driving through deep water.

GEM chief executive David Williams MBE said: "We made this video to help drivers when rain, spray and rising water threaten their safety on the road.”
