WOLFSBURG, Germany - A classic among fuel economy drives is conquering all US states except Alaska and Hawaii in a Volkswagen Passat TDI.
The result: a record low fuel-consumption figure of 3.02 litres/100km (397.2 litres in total) over a distance of 13 071km in 16 days. The car was assembled at VW's Chattanooga (Tennessee) plant and has now covered about 13 000km.
The record drive by blogger Wayne Gerdes and engineer Bob Winger was witnessed by officials of the Guinness World Record Organisation.
RECORD SMASHED
Gerdes said: "We felt we had a good chance of beating the record with a series production Passat TDI but to smash it by averaging 3.02 litres/100km was really impressive and a testament to the potential of VW's TDI vehicles.
"It also shows how much the fuel consumption depends on the driver."
The previous world record was 3.464 litres/100km.
