No-doors Smart heads for Frankfurt

No doors, no rear window and an open roof – the latest model from quirky automaker Smart is sure to turn heads at the upcoming 2013 Frankfurt International Motor Show. What's more, it's equipped with battery-powered Skateboards!

FRANKFURT, Germany -  Smart will debut a compact four-seat model which hints at the next-generation offerings from the quirky automaker – the Fourjoy. The new electric car is headed for its global unveiling at the 2013 Frankfurt motor show.

Powering the Fourjoy is a 55kW magneto-electric motor with a lithium-ion battery capacity of 17.6 kWh.

According to Smart: “When completely empty it takes a maximum of seven hours to fully charge the battery at a household socket or charging station on the electricity systems of most countries.

“The charging time at a wallbox or public charging station can be shortened to less than one hour with the 22 kW on-board charger and a rapid charging cable.”

SMART DESIGN ICON

The compact car measures 3.4m long, 1.9m wide and 1.4m tall. It has a turning circle of 9.1 metres.

Daimler AG’s head of design, Gorden Wagener, said:  “The Smart Fourjoy is the perfect icon of our smart design philosophy that is being carried into a new era. For the first time we are showing the future sporty four-seater character of the new smart family.”

“The typical smart silhouette, the clear lines and styling and also the further development of the smart face make this study a modern design icon.”

A HAT-TIP TO THE ORIGINAL


Numerous design elements are a reference to the first Smart car. These include the extremely short overhangs, the wheels, tail lights and instrumentation.

Head of Smart, Annette Winkler, said: “The Smart Fourjoy is a study that successfully translates the unique design and the urban driving fun of the smart ForTwo to an extremely compact four-seater.

“Numerous details of previous show cars that received very positive feedback have been incorporated in the Fourjoy.

“The exterior proportions already reveal a lot about the appearance of our four-seat production smart which will be launched at the end of 2014 and will also enable families to travel together in a smart.”

INSIDE


The most striking interior features are its front seats and rear bench. According to Smart: “With its organic, sculptural shape, the seats are reminiscent of modern lounge furniture.”

The instrument panel uses a honeycomb structure and comprises of transparent, illuminated plexiglass.

The design of the spherical instrument cluster and the single-spoke steering wheel are reminiscent of the original smart. Two smartphones are mounted on the dashboard and at rear .

ELECTRIC SKATEBOARDS


Two skateboards are fastened on the roof and helmets are stowed under the rear seats. . It’s Smart’s hope that drivers will use these battery driven skateboards to cover short distances within cities without producing any emissions.

A high-definition camera is available to be attached to the skateboards to allow riders to film their trips.
