McLaren fastest in Sakhir Day 2 test

SAKHIR, Bahrain - Formula 1 champion team Red Bull had its best day so far of 2014 pre-season testing as McLaren rookie Kevin Magnussen topped the time sheets in Bahrain.

World champion Sebastian Vettel at last had a chance to become acquainted with the problem-riddled 2014 car as he posted 59 laps in sunny conditions, more than double the number done by Red Bull in previous tests.

'LOT MORE TO COME'

Vettel said: "Definitely a better day. We did more laps, so that's encouraging. It's good to check the car, check the reliability, but there is a lot still to do. It was good to get a proper first feel for the car and it feels good but there's a lot more to come."

Kevin Magnussen continued to build on his impressive start in Formula 1 by completing 46 laps and setting the fastest time - 1min34.910. The fastest time during the 2013 Bahrain F1 GP weekend was by Sebastian Vettel - 1min36.961.

Nico Hulkenberg was more than 1.5sec slower than Magnussen after 59 laps. Valtteri Bottas (Williams) did 116 laps, the most of any driver, and former World champion Fernando Alonso covered plenty of ground for Ferrari with 97 and the day's third fastest time.

Lotus announced that Frenchman Charles Pic will be the team's reserve driver this year following his departure from Caterham.
