The Transport & General Workers Union says the Chinese company is to embark on its first recruitment drive as the firm moves closer to having the first MGTF models coming-off the production line sometime early next year.
"They have started recruiting a limited number of staff to build up for the MGTF - their initial drive is for about 400 people," said Transport and General Workers Union regional secretary, Gerard Coyne.
He added that the Chinese company will commence recruitment over the next three months and plans to have recruited 400 by September.
"They are saying they hope to start production by April 2007," he said. In the region of 40 design and manufacturing engineers are already working at the Longbridge site, on which Nanjing has signed a 33-year lease - with a 6 months get-out clause which expires in August.
